The Chandigarh Education Department has introduced a formal dress code for teachers across government schools in the city, aiming to enhance professionalism and create a positive learning environment.
According to an official statement issued on Saturday, male teachers are now required to wear formal shirts and trousers, while female teachers will don sarees or salwar-kameez. The department noted that this initiative is designed to unify the appearance of educators, foster a sense of equality, and present a professional image to students.

With this move, Chandigarh became the first state or Union Territory to mandate a dress code for government school teachers. The department, following the advice of the UT Administrator, emphasised that a standardised uniform helps minimise socio-economic differences amongst staff and strengthens team spirit and morale within schools.
The dress code has been initially rolled out at the PM Shri Government Model Senior Secondary School, located in Sector-14, Dhanas. Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria welcomed the decision, stating that a unified appearance amongst teachers promotes pride, professionalism, and inclusivity.
The Education Department plans to expand the implementation across all government schools in Chandigarh by the start of the academic session after the summer vacation in 2025.
