The Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a scathing attack on the Kolkata Police, accusing them of behaving like “criminals in the garb of police uniform” during the Nabanna Abhijan protests. BJP leader Amit Malviya, who serves as the co-in-charge of West Bengal, took to social media platform X to share a video allegedly showing police officers using hockey sticks to beat protestors. Malviya questioned whether such methods are part of the police’s standard operating procedures or if the force was simply resorting to criminal tactics to suppress dissent. He further called for the Supreme Court to hold Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accountable for what he described as a gross abuse of state power and the disproportionate use of force against peaceful protestors. The BJP’s accusations have added fuel to the fire, with widespread condemnation of the police’s actions from various quarters. The situation has prompted calls for an independent investigation into the conduct of the Kolkata Police during the protests. Malviya’s comments reflect the growing tensions between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress, as both parties continue to battle for political dominance in West Bengal.
