In today’s fast-paced life, many people opt for store-bought bread instead of homemade rotis made from flour. However, regular consumption of bread can lead to serious health issues.

Dr Mickey Mehta has issued a warning on his social media page, advising against eating bread on a regular basis due to the risk of developing a rare disease known as Auto Brewery Syndrome.

Dr Mehta explained that bread contains yeast, which is essential for its preparation. When consumed frequently, the yeast can proliferate rapidly in the stomach. This excessive growth of yeast causes the bacteria in the stomach to ferment carbohydrates from food, leading to the production of ethanol.

Ethanol, a component of alcohol, can cause intoxication and becomes a poison in the stomach, resulting in Auto Brewery Syndrome.

Auto Brewery Syndrome, also referred to as gut fermentation syndrome, is an intestinal condition where ethanol is produced in the intestine without the consumption of alcohol.

The disease is caused by an increase in yeast or fungus, particularly Saccharomyces or Candida, due to regular bread consumption. Individuals with this syndrome experience an increase in ethanol levels in their bodies whenever they consume sweet foods, as yeast rapidly converts carbohydrates into ethanol.

Symptoms of Auto Brewery Syndrome include dizziness, confusion, fatigue, difficulty speaking, mood swings, and unsteady walking, resembling alcohol intoxication.

To avoid this condition, Dr Mehta advises limiting bread consumption. If bread is consumed, it should be done occasionally and accompanied by a solution of Isabgol.
