Before actually finishing their party level matches, Australia were knocked out of the Twenty20 World Cup after Zimbabwe’s match against Ireland in Sri Lanka washed away.

Australia, on two points, can no longer catch Zimbabwe, on five, even if they win their final game against Oman on Friday ( 12.30am AEDT), with each team taking a point from the rained-off tie.

The covers were on the Pallekele International Stadium for the majority of the time due to regular rain in Kandy, but the game was ultimately called off two and a half hours after the arranged start.

So, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka advance to the Super Eight, with Thursday’s fit between the team ruling who will win the group.

Australia has been knocked out of a World Cup for the first time since 2009 in either the T20 or ODI forms. Their sole triumph came over Ireland, who was also wiped out by the disaster.

Seven clubs have now advanced to the next round.

Along with defending leaders India, West Indies, and South Africa, Zimbabwe will also be in Group 1. Sri Lanka is in Group 2, along with Pakistan, New Zealand, and the United States.

Before that, Canada’s batsman Yuvraj Samra’s incredible era was in useless as New Zealand advanced to the Super 8s with an eight-wicket victory in Chennai.

Afghanistan, the semi-finalist of the 2024 event, was eliminated thanks to New Zealand’s unwavering success.

In their last Group C sport, Scotland will play against Nepal in Mumbai afterwards. Both factors have already been eliminated.
