After Zimbabwe’s suit against Ireland in Sri Lanka washed out, Australia were knocked out of the Twenty20 World Cup before actually wrapping up their party games.

Australia, on two points, can no longer catch Zimbabwe, on five, even if they win their final game against Oman on Friday ( 12.30am AEDT), with each side taking a point from the rained-off tie.

The covers were on the Pallekele International Stadium for the majority of the time due to regular rain in Kandy, but the game was ultimately called off two and a half hours after the arranged start.

So, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka advance to the Super Eight, with the winner of the group’s match on Thursday.

Australia has been knocked out of a World Cup for the first time since 2009 in either the T20 or ODI forms. Ireland, who was also wiped out by the disaster, was their only success.

In the second large, seven groups have already qualified.

Along with defending leaders India, West Indies, and South Africa, Zimbabwe will be in Group 1. England, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the United States all share Group 2.

Before that, Canada’s batsman Yuvraj Samra’s spectacular decade in vain helped New Zealand reach the Super 8s by winning by eight wickets in Chennai.

Afghanistan, the 2024 semi-finalist, was knocked out of the game by New Zealand’s rousing victory.

In their last Group C activity, Scotland taking on Nepal in Mumbai afterwards. Both factors have already been thrown out.
