The Seattle Seahawks have used a smothering defensive display to overcome the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LX.

Seattle’s defence sacked Patriots quarterback Drake Maye six times, forcing three vital turnovers in the fourth quarter of the 29-13 win in Santa Clara.

Seattle’s win secures a second NFL championship for the Seahawks franchise, and makes Sydney-born punter Michael Dickson the second Australian to play in a winning Super Bowl after Jordan Mailata’s triumph last year.

The Sydney product — the Seahawks’ longest-serving player, in his eighth season — averaged 47.5 yards on seven punts and was faultless holding for Jason Myers’s five-of-five field goals.

Dickson’s well directed, right-footed cannons regularly pinned the Pats deep in their own end.

He had commentators raving when a final-quarter, 55-yard bomb settled one yard from the goal line to snuff out any hopes of a New England comeback.

Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III was named the Super Bowl MVP after racking up 135 yards on 27 carries, becoming the first running back to claim the prestigious honour since Terrell Davis in 1998.

Maye endured a night to forget in his first Super Bowl appearance, going 27/43 and throwing for 295 yards and two interceptions along with two touchdowns.

Seattle tight end AJ Barner scored the first touchdown of the Super Bowl before linebacker Uchenna Nwosu added a second following a Maye turnover.

The Seahawks’ win comes in 38-year-old coach Mike Macdonald’s second season in charge.

Grammy Award-winning Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny performed the half-time show, bringing out special guests Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, while other celebrities such as Cardi B, Jessica Alba and Pedro Pascal were also involved in the production. The half-time show ended with a powerful message of love calling for America to unite.

Seahawks coach Macdonald speaks after Super Bowl win

By Chris De Silva

Here’s Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald.

“I had 100 per cent confidence,” he says.

“We’ve got the best team. We’ve got the best fans in the world, twelves, look at how many twelves are in this stadium right now.

“We never wavered, we believed in each other, we loved each other.

“They just made a decision that they were going to play a certain way, and they lived up to the ‘Dark Side’ [name] today — it’s going to go down in the history books.”

By Chris De Silva

It’s been a long road to a Super Bowl for Sam Darnold after he was drafted third overall in the 2018 draft.

Darnold started with the New York Jets, and then bounced around with stints at the Panthers, 49ers and Vikings before landing at the Seahawks, where he is now a Super Bowl winner.

“It’s unbelievable,” he says.

“Everything that’s happened in my career, but to do it with this team, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“All my teammates, all the coaches I ever had, they always believed in me, I always believed in myself.

“As long as you believe in yourself, anything is possible.”

Darnold finishes the game going 19/38 for 202 passing yards, having thrown for one touchdown. He also had five rushing yards on two carries.

GAME OVER!

THE SEATTLE SEAHAWKS ARE YOUR SUPER BOWL LX CHAMPIONS!

Gatorade showers all over for Seattle coach Mike Macdonald, who wins the Super Bowl at just 38 years of age.

He is visibly emotional as he looks into the sky to see all the confetti being sprayed out onto the turf.

“It’s just a dream come true,” says Kenneth Walker III, who was brilliant tonight.

“A lot of people play their whole career and never make it this far.

“We went through adversity throughout the season, but we stayed together. We’ve got a brotherhood going on right now and it’s special.”

Seattle’s defence won the game, sacking Patriots quarterback Drake Maye a ridiculous seven times, forcing three turnovers.

“It’s crazy,” cornerback Devon Witherspoon says.

“You talk about a group of guys who believe in each other and believe in their coach. We went through a lot, but we believed.

“It’s a one-of-a-kind feeling.”

Walker III has touchdown chalked off by a flag

By Chris De Silva

Kenneth Walker III rushes right through the middle of the Patriots defence for a touchdown, but we’ve got a flag.

The penalty is on Jalen Sundell, who is deemed to have been holding Robert Spillane of the Patriots.

Walker III with a wry smile. It’s not going to alter the game, this call, but it’s always nice to have a Super Bowl touchdown. He deserved that because he’s been superb today.

Just 2:21 left on the clock now. We’re not far away from the Seahawks being crowned champions.

TOUCHDOWN! The Patriots get a consolation score

By Chris De Silva

The Patriots finally have their best drive of the night and it results in a touchdown for Rhamondre Stevenson.

It’s almost a fumble thanks to another errant throw from Maye, but Stevenson manages to hold on.

The Pats go for a two-point conversion, but are unsuccessful.

It’s all a bit cosmetic really. With just 2:21 left on the clock, the Patriots aren’t coming back in this one.

TOUCHDOWN! Seahawks strike after another Maye sack

By Chris De Silva

THAT IS GAME!

Drake Maye is blitzed and swallowed up by the Seahawks defence again for his seventh sack of the night.

The sack forces the ball loose and Uchenna Nwosu recovers it and runs all the way down to the other end for a touchdown!

That’s Maye’s third turnover of the night as well. Just a horrible, horrible outing for the Patriots superstar.

Maye sacked for the SIXTH time

By Chris De Silva

Drake Maye is going to be seeing this Seattle defence in his sleep tonight.

It’s the four-man rush that does it again, as they swallow up the Patriots quarterback whole.

We’re into the final five minutes. Can the Patriots pull a rabbit out of the hat?

The Seahawks go close, but not quite close enough on another drive and settle for a field goal.

Myers drills a 26-yard attempt right through the big sticks to give the Seahawks a 15-point lead with 5:35 left on the clock.

Myers’s five field goals is a Super Bowl record.

A nice drive for the Patriots ends with a shabby throw from Drake Maye and it lands in the arms of Julian Love.

Love intercepts and gains 35 yards for the Seahawks. That’s a massive blow if you’re the Pats.

Michael Dickson is having a superb game out there folks!

The Seahawks go for a punt after Darnold’s incomplete pass to Shaheed, and Dickson unfurls another brilliant punt that lands inside 20.

Shaheed and Darnold almost connect on a long-range play

By Chris De Silva

Darnold airs out another loooong throw, this time aimed at Rashid Shaheed, who is out the back of the defence again, but the ball is juuuuuust too long.

That would have been some connection that!

Smith-Njigba back on the field after passing concussion test

By Chris De Silva

Great news for the Seahawks as Jaxon Smith-Njigba runs back onto the field with his team having a first down.

They might need him to produce something special in order to properly close the Pats out.

TOUCHDOWN! Patriots drag one back!

By Chris De Silva

Well, well, well!

Drake May throws two absolute DIMES out of nowhere and suddenly the Pats are on the board!

An absolutely brilliant 35-yard pass into the left corner from Maye and it’s Mack Hollins who gets the touchdown.

That 35-yarder followed a 24-yard sniper that found Hollins in the middle of the field.

The conversion is in and here come the Patriots! An interesting choice from the Pats to not go for a two-point conversion.

There’s 12:27 left on the clock, still plenty of time if they can get their offence humming.

Tempers flare as Diggs and Jobe exchange blows

By Chris De Silva

Frustrations are beginning to boil over for the Patriots.

Stefon Diggs, who has been completely unsighted in this Super Bowl, is pushed to the ground by Josh Jobe.

Diggs comes in to remonstrate with Jobe and there’s a scuffle that ensues.

Replays appear to show Jobe throwing a punch as well.

Darnold airs one out at 3rd and 9 to find Kupp with another great throw in close quarters.

The Seahawks are just doing enough out there.

Darnold airs out another one on the very next play and finds AJ Barner for the first touchdown of the Super Bowl!

Five plays and 37 yards leading to the touchdown.

We’ve had to wait a long, long time for that. Myers drills the conversion and is that the game?

3QT: Seahawks 12 lead Patriots 0

By Chris De Silva

Seattle with the ball in a fantastic position to start the final quarter and they’ll feel they’re 12 minutes away from the Super Bowl.

This defence has just been sensationally menacing. It’s as intimidating a performance as I’ve seen in a Super Bowl in a long time.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye hasn’t had a free moment all night and he’s now been sacked a total of five times, the last of those leading to a turnover.

A big defensive stand coming up after the break. If the Seahawks are able to convert it into a touchdown, the first of the Super Bowl, that might be curtains.

Seattle is without Jaxon Smith-Njigba though, who looks like he’s getting assessed for a concussion.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold 15/31 for 163 passing yards, while Maye is 8/18 for just 61 passing yards in comparison.

Truly, truly a night to forget.

Maye is in HELL out there!

He’s hammered by Derick Hall again, his second sack of the night and the ball is knocked lose and the Seattle defence recovers it.

That could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back here.
