Australian qualifier Talia Gibson has continued her stunning form with an upset win over former world number one Naomi Osaka at the Miami Open.

Gibson defeated 16th seed and four-time major winner Osaka in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the round of 32.

The 21-year-old, ranked 68 in the world, will next face 18th seed Iva Jovic.

Gibson arrived in Miami fresh from her quarterfinal appearance at the prestigious Indian Wells tournament last week.

She defeated three seeds, including world number seven Jasmine Paolini, in Indian Wells before going down to Linda Nosková in the last eight.

“I was able to draw on some experiences from Indian Wells to stay calm,” Gibson said.

“It’s been really cool to see what I am capable of and it’s really exciting for me.”

Gibson was the first Australian woman to reach the Indian Wells quarterfinals since Casey Dellacqua in 2014.

Her results saw her crack the top 100 on the WTA rankings for the first time in her career.

Gibson beat world number 41 Sara Bejlek 6-1, 6-0 in her first-round match in Miami.

Jovic comfortably got past former world number two Paula Badosa in the round of 64, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Gibson’s fellow Australian Aleksandar Vukic exited the men’s main draw via a 6-1, 6-2 loss to Rafael Jódar.
