In an earlier report, Dr Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital said the veteran singer was admitted following the cardiac arrest and remains under care in the Emergency Medical Services unit. Further updates from Bhosle’s family or the hospital are awaited.

The legendary singer is the last surviving icon from Bollywood’s golden era of music of the fiftes, sixties and the seventies, which comprised Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammad Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Bhosle herself.

Sister of playback singer Lata Mangeshkar, Bhosle is a member of the prominent Mangeshkar family. She was renowned for her soprano voice and versatility, performing across genres including film music, pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional Indian classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, and Rabindra Sangeet. She sang in over 20 Indian and foreign languages.

Bhosle’s career was marked by her wide range, from soulful ghazals to energetic cabaret numbers. Her collaboration with OP Nayyar produced songs like Aao Huzoor Tumko, while her timeless hit Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko with RD Burman remains a classic romantic anthem.

She brought sensuality to tracks such as Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja and Yeh Mera Dil, influencing the sound of Hindi cinema. Beyond this, she demonstrated depth in songs like In Aankhon Ki Masti and Dil Cheez Kya Hai, showcasing her command over classical melodies.

In the 1990s and early 2000s, Bhosle experienced a resurgence with a modern, pop-infused style. Her work with AR Rahman included hits like Tanha Tanha and Rangeela Re. Hits such as Raat Akeli Hai and Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main were chart successes. She also released notable Indipop tracks including Janat-e-Jahan and Kabhi To Nazar Milao.

British alternative rock band Cornershop dedicated the 1997 international hit Brimful of Asha to her, which topped the UK Singles Chart in February 1998. The song has seen several remixes, including one by Norman Cook, also known as Fatboy Slim.

Asha Bhosle received India’s highest civilian and cinematic honours for her contributions to music. She was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008. She won two National Film Awards for her performances in the films “Umrao Jaan” and “Ijaazat.” In 2011, the Guinness Book of World Records recognised her as the most recorded artist in music history.
