“Arijit Singh announced his retirement because he got tired of singing the same song again and again.” That’s filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s blunt take on why Arijit Singh has decided to stop accepting new playback assignments.

Singh, one of the most recognisable voices in modern Hindi cinema, revealed on January 27 that he would no longer take up new projects as a playback vocalist. Thanking fans for their unwavering support, he described it as the end of a “wonderful journey”. Kashyap, however, believes the decision runs deeper than a simple farewell.

Why does Anurag Kashyap think Arijit stepped back?

Speaking to Tried and Refused Productions, Kashyap suggested creative fatigue may have played a role. “Always the heartbreak song,” he remarked, hinting that Singh may have grown weary of being slotted into a particular emotional mould.

According to Kashyap, the singer’s range extends far beyond melancholic ballads. He pointed out that Singh composed music for Pagglait and is also a filmmaker in his own right. “There is more to Arijit Singh than heartbreak songs,” he said.

Is there more to Arijit than playback singing?

Absolutely. Singh first gained attention on the reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 before breaking through with Phir Mohabbat from Murder 2 and later Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2. Over the years, he became synonymous with romantic chartbusters.

But Kashyap insists Singh thrives when given creative freedom. Recalling their collaboration on Nishaanchi, he noted that Singh experimented extensively because the brief allowed him space.

What does this mean for Hindi film music?

Singh’s decision has sparked conversations about artistic autonomy in Bollywood. Kashyap argued that musicians who work “from the soul” need room to evolve — not be boxed into formulaic expectations.

For now, Singh’s voice may step back from film credits, but if Kashyap is right, this pause could simply mark the beginning of a different, perhaps bolder, chapter.
