Jagga Smith had to watch from the sidelines when Richmond generator Sam Lalor made his debut to the footy scene last month.
Currently, Carlton’s past No. Smith, the third pick in the draft, and Lalor, the man chosen with two picks in front of him at the end of 2024, may ultimately go head-to-head.
And neither of their tutors is eager to see who emerges victorious.
Smith, 20, had 27 disposals on album despite Carlton’s unsatisfactory defeat to Sydney in the opening round after missing the entirety of his debut season after torn ACL in February.
Lalor, 19, scored two goals with 18 disposals last year as Richmond stunned Carlton in the first round of the competition. He also revealed signs of the forward-midfield dynamo he had become in 11 games before hamstring problems destroyed his 2025 career.
Adem Yze, a coach for Richmond, said,” Truly exciting for Jagga- I’ve known Jagga for a while, and you clearly hate seeing younger children get hurt.
When you get the chance to see them play against one another, it’s going to be truly interesting for both venues, according to the coach.
“… He’s ( Smith ) undoubtedly going to pose a threat that we must be concerned about.
After pinch-hitting past season, Yze predicted Lalor would play more minutes in the middle, possible in a 60-40 forward-midfield split.
Big, strong Lalor and the slightly less effective, quick-moving Smith are most likely to square off in the middle.
” I don’t suppose I want Jagga at full up,” remarked Blues coach Michael Voss.
I hope we can see it through the midst. Both of them are talented young people.
They are both very different players, having to interpret all the data through the draft: one is very power-oriented, and Jagga was chosen as the player we thought would be the best fit for us.
” I’m sure Richmond aren’t let down either,” I’m certain they’ll cross roads, and we’re evidently hoping we can prevail.
Despite neither group making finals the previous year, the game is expected to attract a sizable audience.
Carlton and Richmond deserved the year opening, Yze doesn’t agree with any questions.
It’s such an important sport and such an interesting sport for both leagues, he said.
A rounded one match against Carlton is one that you really want to play, even talking to people who are missing out now.
” So I think it speaks for itself, for the people, for our club, for their team, and for the bracket, to average an 80, 000-crowd every year for how many years we’ve done that,” he said.
