James Anderson marked his much-anticipated return to competitive cricket by claiming two wickets for 24 runs for Lancashire in their County Championship fixture against Derbyshire on May 17. The veteran seamer’s performance played a key role in putting Lancashire in control on Day 2 of the match at Old Trafford.
Making his first appearance of the season after recovering from a calf injury, Anderson wasted little time reminding fans of his class. Despite conceding three boundaries in his opening over, the 42-year-old struck with his 18th delivery, removing Caleb Jewell to break Derbyshire’s opening partnership. He later dismissed David Lloyd, further denting the visitors’ innings and reducing them to 112/4 — still trailing Lancashire’s first-innings total of 458 by a considerable margin.

This outing marked Anderson’s first competitive match since his international farewell against the West Indies last June. Earlier this year, he signed a one-year contract extension with Lancashire, committing to red-ball cricket following the end of his England career.
The Old Trafford crowd greeted his return with a warm standing ovation, and Anderson responded in kind with a typically precise and effective spell. Though now part of England’s coaching setup as a bowling consultant, Anderson has been vocal about his desire to continue contributing on the field.
With 1,100+ first-class wickets to his name, the County Championship’s most prolific bowler showed once again why he remains an invaluable asset for Lancashire.
