Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has said that his government will toughen the state’s anti-sacrilege law to make ‘beadbi’ (sacrilege) of Guru Granth Sahib punishable by a maximum punishment of life in prison.

He said that the AAP government will be convening a special session of the state Assembly on April 13 to introduce amendments to the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2008 for stricter punishment against sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib and other sacred texts.

“On April 13, we will amend the ‘Beadbi’ law; anyone committing ‘beadbi’ of Sri Guru Granth Sahib will face 10 years to life imprisonment,” the CM said at an event in Fatehgarh Sahib on Saturday, according to news agency PTI.

In a staunch warning, he said that no one involved in incidents of sacrilege would be spared.

CM Mann also launched a scathing attack on the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) over instances of sacrilege that took place during its government in Punjab.

Meanwhile, he said that his government is taking decisive steps to ensure justice by strengthening laws and enforcing strict punishment.

“On the occasion of Baisakhi, we have called a special Assembly session to amend the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Act, 2008. Anyone attempting ‘beadbi‘ will face the strictest punishment, with a minimum of 10 years and up to life imprisonment,” the Punjab CM added.

He further stated, “No one should dare to disrespect Sri Guru Granth Sahib. We are also consulting the Sant Samaj. This is something only we can and must do, and it cannot be expected from any other government.”
