A prestigious international award previously handed to world leaders including Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am and controversial Argentinian libertarian president Javier Milei will be given to Anthony Albanese when he travels to New York later this year.
It is understood the Prime Minister will be awarded the Global Citizens Award by the Atlantic Council – a nonpartisan global think tank – on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
The annual award recognises leaders for their contributions toward addressing global challenges, with the ceremony counted as “the premier forum for world leaders, diplomats, the C-Suite, and the philanthropic, social, and entertainment communities”, according to the Atlantic Council.
Last year’s honourees include France’s President Emmanuel Macron, Argentina’s controversial libertarian president, Javier Milei, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Other awardees include Italian President Giorgia Meloni in 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in 2023, Black Eyed Peas’ singer will.i.am in 2019, as well as former Israeli President Shimon Peres and actor Robert De Niro in 2014.
Former US President Bill Clinton was given the Distinguished International Leadership Award in 2010.
The ABC, which first reported the award, said the Atlantic Council was bestowing the award on the Prime Minister for his “inspirational leadership of Australia, his commitment to strengthening the AUKUS partnership and Indo-Pacific security co-operation and his efforts security co-operation and his efforts security co-operation and his efforts to expand across South-East Asia and the across South-East Asia and the across South-East Asia and the Pacific”.
