A cutting-edge medical scan has uncovered new secrets hidden inside ancient Egyptian mummies, offering a rare glimpse into lives lived more than 2,000 years ago.
Researchers using advanced CT imaging technology say the findings could transform how scientists study mummified remains, without ever unwrapping them.
The research was carried out at the Medical Imaging Centre of Semmelweis University, where experts scanned several Egyptian mummy remains using a next-generation CT scanner equipped with a photon-counting detector. This state-of-the-art technology produces highly detailed images that were not possible with earlier scans.

According to the research team, the goal was to examine the internal structure of the remains, identify possible diseases, and better understand ancient mummification techniques. The scans were conducted at night, outside regular clinical hours, following standard medical protocols.
WHAT DID THE EGYPTIAN MUMMIES HIDE?
The mummies, part of the collection at the Semmelweis Museum of Medical History, date back over two millennia.
Radiocarbon analysis of some specimens places them between 401 and 259 BCE, making them more than 2,300 years old.
One of the most striking discoveries came from a previously misunderstood artefact. Initially believed to be a human head, or even a bird mummy, earlier scans had suggested it was something else entirely.
The new high-resolution images have now confirmed that the object is actually an adult human foot, wrapped and preserved as part of a larger body.
The scans also revealed possible signs of disease. In one case, researchers identified indications of osteoporosis in a lower limb, though further analysis is needed to determine whether it was age-related or caused by another condition.
Detailed imaging of skulls and teeth is expected to help scientists more accurately estimate the age and biological profile of the individuals. In some cases, the clarity of the scans could even enable future 3D facial reconstructions, bringing ancient faces back to life.
Researchers say the technology is especially valuable because it allows non-destructive analysis of fragile remains. It can reveal layers of bandaging, bone structure, and even subtle abnormalities without disturbing it.
Experts believe these findings mark a turning point in mummy research. By combining archaeology with advanced medical imaging, scientists are now able to unlock secrets that have remained hidden for thousands of years, offering new insights into ancient health, culture, and burial practices.
