Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan has spoken highly of his son, actor Varun Dhawan, as they collaborate on the film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The director emphasised their strong bond and mutual respect, both on and off screen. Dhawan hinted that this project could potentially mark his last directorial venture.

In a conversation with ANI, Dhawan discussed their relationship while working together, noting the deep mutual respect they share. “A director always wants a good actor, that’s the first priority. He’s not just my son; he questions, he understands, and he has already done 13-14 films. We get along really well, and I said that as long as I am making it, it would be good to make one or two with my son,” Dhawan explained, highlighting their professional equation.

Despite their familial ties, Dhawan maintains a professional approach on set. “When I’m behind the camera, he’s not my son, he is an actor. I just need the result,” he stated, adding that their understanding aids smooth collaboration. He also addressed Varun’s playful complaints about not receiving a full script, explaining, “In our time, films were made on trust. Even actors like Salman Khan or Govinda or Sanjay Dutt didn’t always hear full scripts. We narrated scenes, and that’s how films were made.”

Reflecting on Varun’s growth as an actor, Dhawan praised his emotional range and performance in ‘Border 2 and called him brilliant in the film.

In a candid revelation, Dhawan suggested that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai might be his final directorial venture. “I don’t think I should do more. This might be my last film… after this, I’ll just be Varun’s father,” Dhawan said, alluding to health concerns.

Dhawan also recounted an emotional incident from the film’s shoot, sharing how Varun supported him during a health scare. “I was very unwell during the shooting of this film. Varun took great care of me, he had all doctors’ numbers, stayed in touch with them, and was always there. He’s a complete family man,” he said.

With a career spanning over three decades and more than 45 films, Dhawan expressed contentment with his journey, having worked with stars like Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor, Govinda, and Salman Khan. Dhawan credited his mentor, film producer and director Manmohan Desai, for shaping his filmmaking style.

Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai features Varun Dhawan alongside Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. The film reunites Varun with his father, David Dhawan, known for delivering light-hearted entertainers over the years. The film is produced by Ramesh Taurani and is set to release in theatres on June 12, following a teaser release earlier.
