A man allegedly murdered his mother with a household knife near Newcastle overnight while another man was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of masked intruders nearby.
Blaise McIntyre, 25, was arrested after officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District responded to a concern for welfare report shortly after 8pm at a home on Merrigum Street in Windale, southwest of Newcastle.
The body of a woman whom police believe to be McIntyre’s mother was found at the scene, according to Lake Macquarie Police District Commander, Superintendent Tracy Chapman.
“There was a Triple Zero call made by a male, and we’ll allege it was the male arrested,” Chapman told journalists, adding that the woman, aged in her 40s, was found with injuries to her face and body.
She said the woman died at the scene.
Police will allege the woman was killed with a household knife, which was seized for forensic tests.
There were “no reports available” of any previous domestic violence incidents between the pair, Chapman said.
McIntyre was charged with domestic violence murder. His case was briefly mentioned in the bail division of the local court on Sunday.
He did not appear via audiovisual link as bail was formally refused, and will next face court in June.
Also overnight, 12 kilometres away in the suburb of Argenton, a man was allegedly stabbed to death by a group of home invaders.
Chapman said emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 4am on Sunday morning following reports of a man having been stabbed.
“Despite the best efforts, again, of ambulance and police, that man died at the scene,” she said.
“He’s not been formally identified at this stage, but it is believed to be a man in his 30s.”
Chapman said investigators believed that a group of six to eight men “wearing dark clothing and face coverings” had forced entry into a unit and assaulted the man before leaving.
While the man was found with “a number of stab wounds”, Chapman said she did not have information about the type of weapon used.
Police have not yet found those allegedly behind what police believed to be a targeted attack, and no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon.
Chapman said the victim was known to police.
Crime scenes have been established at both Lake Macquarie locations.
Anyone with information about either incident was urged to contact Lake Macquarie police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 33 000.
