After more than 20 hours of talks and multiple points of agreement, the US-Iran negotiations in Pakistan ended without a deal. According to US President Donald Trump, the negotiations collapsed because of Iran’s twin priorities. The US-Iran talks marked the first direct engagement between the US and Iran in more than a decade and followed a 14-day ceasefire aimed at creating space for diplomacy.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump made it clear that, in his view, the talks ultimately boiled down to two issues. “They want money and, more importantly, they want Nuclear,” he wrote, framing Iran’s demands as incompatible with US red lines. “Additionally and, at an appropriate moment, we are fully ‘LOCKED AND LOADED,’ and our Military will finish up the little that is left of Iran!” he threatened Tehran.

IRAN BLAMES US FOR BREAKDOWN IN TRUST

Tehran, however, has presented a sharply different account of why the talks failed. Iranian officials have said the negotiations stalled due to a lack of trust in Washington’s commitments. Iran’s Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said the US failed to build confidence despite what he described as constructive proposals from Tehran.

“The US has understood Iran’s logic and principles and it’s time for them to decide whether they can earn our trust or not,” Qalibaf said on X.

TALKS SHOW PROGRESS BUT FAIL ON KEY DEMAND

Despite the collapse, Trump acknowledged that discussions were not entirely unproductive. He noted that several issues saw agreement, and even described the tone of engagement between delegations as respectful over time.

“My three Representatives became, not surprisingly, very friendly and respectful of Iran’s Representatives,” he said, referring to Iranian officials including Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi and Ali Bagheri.

The US President dismissed other areas of agreement reached during negotiations, saying they were irrelevant compared to the nuclear question. “The meeting went well, most points were agreed to, but the only point that really mattered, NUCLEAR, was not,” Trump said. Reiterating a long-standing position, he added: “IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”

The US President portrayed Iran’s stance as rigid, non-negotiable and claimed that prolonged engagement failed to shift Tehran’s position on its nuclear ambitions.

TRUMP ORDERS BLOCKADE IN STRAIT OF HORMUZ

Alongside his explanation for the failed talks, Trump also issued a series of stark warnings in order to escalate military pressure. The US President further warned of direct retaliation against any hostile action at sea, stating: “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!”

These remarks came as Washington moved towards enforcing a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. “Effective immediately, the United States Navy will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz,” he said.

He also accused Iran of using threats of naval mines to disrupt global shipping, calling it “WORLD EXTORTION” and arguing that such tactics had effectively undermined trust during negotiations. US Vice President JD Vance had said that Iran had refused to accept key American conditions, including assurances that it would not pursue nuclear weapons.

IRAN CLAIMS FULL CONTROL OF HORMUZ

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a sharp warning in response to Trump’s naval blockade in Hormuz. IRGC said Iranian forces remain in full control of the critical waterway. In a statement posted in Persian on X on Sunday, the Guards’ naval command cautioned that any misstep by adversaries would trigger a strong response.

“All traffic is under the full control of the armed forces,” the post said. “The enemy will become trapped in a deadly vortex in the Strait if it makes the wrong move.”
