According to NSW Police, the driver was followed to a nearby service station where he was swarmed by several motorbike riders and allegedly assaulted.

He then left the scene, driving toward a shopping centre carpark before crashing his vehicle into a fire hydrant.

Police tracked the 49-year-old alleged driver to an address in Bass Hill about 9am on Saturday, where he was arrested.

The man is under police guard in Bankstown Hospital being treated for facial injuries and suspected arm fracture.
