As many as 57 students residing at a girls’ hostel in Ahmedabad fell ill with food poisoning on Sunday.
About 900 girls reside in the hostel, said Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s Medical Officer, Dr Bhavin Solanki, adding that 57 of them were rushed to a private hospital after they complained of symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach ache, and weakness.
While 18 students were admitted, the rest were discharged after outpatient observation, hospital officials said.

The condition of those admitted is reported to be stable.
Medical examinations revealed that the students had consumed pani puri and dabeli from outside, as well as food prepared at the hostel, Dr Solanki informed.
An official of the private hospital said that a detailed investigation is necessary to determine the exact cause of the incident, but indicated that food contamination could be responsible for the symptoms.
The students first reported symptoms on Saturday night. Initially, they were given routine medication.
However, as more and more students became ill, they were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
As the number of patients continued to rise, the hospital informed the food department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
Food and water samples were subsequently collected from the hostel for testing, officials said.
