A woman was left ‘covered in blood’ and hospitalised following an alleged racist attack in Australia’s capital.
A 27-year-old Chinese woman was walking with a friend at Macdermoot Place in Belconnen, Canberra, around 5.45pm on Thursday when she was allegedly repeatedly punched in the head.
According to police, the alleged offender — a woman — produced a knife and made threats before fleeing the scene in a dark grey Falcon sedan.
The woman, named as KK Zhang, told 7NEWS.com.au that this incident had left her “terrified”.
“I had always thought Canberra was safe, not much violence, until I experienced this myself,” she said.
She claimed the confrontation began after a young person directed racist abuse towards her.
They allegedly used a slur to mock Chinese speech, prompting Ms Zhang to confront the child and record the interaction.
Ms Zhang claimed the alleged offender approached from behind and grabbed her phone that was recording, triggering a physical altercation.
“She was punching me, and I think her nails scratched me — I ended up with a 5mm cut on my face and bruising on my arms,” she told 7NEWS.com.au
“My left ear was bleeding, including the piercing, and my nose was bleeding too.”
The alleged attacker was not known to the victim or her friend, police said.
The victim was transported to hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries” according to police.
