The makers of Ramayana have unveiled the first glimpse of actor Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram in the film. The nearly 2.5-minute teaser offers a window into the grand world of the two-part epic, directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra. Kapoor, who headlines the film as Maryada Purushottam Rama, is seen in multiple avatars – as a king, the ideal son, a warrior, and a righteous man.

The video opens by establishing Lord Ram as the ultimate saviour and the most ideal figure to have walked the earth. Introducing him, the teaser states, “Whenever the world descends into chaos, he is always the answer. Ruling our hearts for over 5,000 years – our protector, our hero, the legend.”

It goes on to declare, “We celebrate the greatest of all time – Maryada Purushottam Rama.”

The teaser also showcases striking visual work crafted by the eight-time Oscar-winning studio DNEG, in collaboration with Monster Mind Creations. The project promises a fresh cinematic take on the ancient epic by sage Valmiki.

Rama: A hero defined by his choices

Rama is portrayed as a hero defined by the choices he makes. He prioritises duty over desire and willingly relinquishes power when it is right to do so. Known as Maryada Purushottama, or “the highest ideal of human conduct,” Rama embodies dignity, compassion, and moral clarity, even in the face of exile, loss, and injustice. This timeless quality lies at the heart of his enduring appeal.

Director Nitesh Tiwari said, “Ramayana‘s greatness lies in its emotional richness. At its heart, it is not just about good and evil, but about choices, consequences, and the weight of doing what is right. Rama’s journey is deeply human, and that is what we have tried to stay true to.”

Ranbir Kapoor shared his thoughts on portraying Rama: “I don’t think I am here to represent Rama. I am here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare, and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience.”

Producer and creative architect Namit Malhotra reflected on the story’s power: “The power of Rama’s story is not in what he conquers, but in what he lets go of. He represents a standard that is not easy, not convenient, but necessary. He chooses duty over desire, truth over comfort, and sacrifice over self. That is why his story has endured for thousands of years, and why it continues to matter today.”

The first part is scheduled to hit the screens as the big Diwali release this year. Ramayana also features Sai Pallavi as goddess Sita, Ravie Dubey as Laxman, Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Yash as Ravana.
