A woman in Michigan briefly escaped police custody in a dramatic moment caught on video, after managing to slip out of a patrol car despite being handcuffed.

According to a report by CBS News, the incident took place on Saturday afternoon in Muskegon Heights, a city in western Michigan. Police later confirmed that the woman has since been located and taken back into custody.

The sequence began when an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle parked near a vacant commercial property. Upon approaching it, the officer spoke to the occupants and was able to identify the driver. However, the female passenger could not be immediately identified.

A second officer arrived with a fingerprint scanner, which was used to confirm her identity. It was then discovered that she had an outstanding parole violation warrant, leading to her arrest.

After being handcuffed, she was placed in the back seat of a police vehicle while officers continued searching the original car. However, what happened next was captured by a stranger standing nearby.

“A short time later, while officers were searching the suspect’s vehicle, the female was able to squeeze through the partially open rear window, exit the patrol vehicle, and flee the scene on foot,” the police department report said, according to CBS News.

The video showed the woman manoeuvring herself through the narrow opening of the rear window, despite her hands being cuffed behind her back. Once she managed to get one leg out, she pushed herself through completely and ran in the opposite direction, away from the officers.

Police realised she had escaped shortly after, but initial attempts to locate her were unsuccessful. Later that same day, a break-in was reported by a resident on Peck Street, and authorities believe the same woman may have been involved.

She remained at large until Tuesday morning, when she was found inside a vacant home in Muskegon Heights. Officers took her into custody again, and she is currently being held at the Muskegon County Jail, with charges expected.

“Muskegon Heights PD would like to thank the citizen who called in and reported the female’s location,” the follow-up police report said, as cited by CBS News.
