Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined Rs 12 lakh after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 opener against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Tuesday, March 31, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

PBKS, who finished runners-up last season, made an impressive start to their IPL 2026 campaign with a three-wicket win over the Titans.

In a media release issued on Wednesday, the IPL said PBKS were found to be in breach of Article 2.22 of the league’s Code of Conduct. Since it was the team’s first offence of the season, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakh.

“Punjab Kings (PBKS) Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate,” the media advisory said. “As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakhs.”

As per the IPL Code of Conduct, teams are required to complete their bowling innings within 90 minutes. For a first offence, only the captain is fined, which in this case is Rs 12 lakh. If the team commits a second over-rate offence, the captain is fined Rs 24 lakh, while the rest of the playing XI are penalised Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.

For the third and every subsequent offence in a season, the captain is fined Rs 30 lakh, regardless of whether the designated captain was part of the playing XII, which includes the playing XI and the Impact Player. Meanwhile, each member of the playing XI, excluding the designated captain, is fined the lesser of Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of his match fee.
