Hyderabad: A second-year Intermediate MPC student from a government junior college in Kachiguda, Mahima Keerthana, has written a letter to Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy, highlighting alleged gender bias in a recent English question paper.
Questions reflected stereotypical gender roles: Inter student
In her letter, sent via email on Tuesday, March 31, Mahima pointed out that the Intermediate second-year English exam included two dialogue-writing questions that, in her view, reflected stereotypical gender roles, a report by Eenadu stated.
One question asked students to write a conversation between a mother and daughter about teaching cooking, while another asked for a dialogue between a father and son discussing the son’s future plans.
Questioning the framing, Mahima wrote, “Does cooking only belong to girls? Even in this modern era, are girls expected to be confined to the kitchen?” She urged authorities to revise such content, stating that questions reinforcing gender stereotypes have no place in today’s education system.
Mahima shares personal experience
Mahima shared her personal experience to support her argument, noting that both her parents cook at home and that she herself enjoys cooking. At the same time, she has excelled in sports—she was the champion at the 2023 Under-19 Rifle Shooting competition organised by the School Games Federation of India in Telangana and is a national-level rifle shooter.
Education system should teach equality: Mahima
Emphasising the role of education in shaping values, she said, “Our education system should teach equality. I felt disappointed to see gender-biased questions in an examination. I hope such issues will be addressed and corrected.”
