On Sunday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that US- and Israeli-linked universities in the region would now be considered “legitimate targets”. According to reports, this was in response to the destruction of Iranian academic institutions by Washington and Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, social media platforms are also flooded with videos claiming to show massive destruction in Tel Aviv caused by Iranian strikes. In this article, we will debunk two such old videos.

UKRAINE, NOT TEL AVIV

Aerial footage of destroyed buildings and debris was shared with the claim that it showed Tel Aviv’s state amid the ongoing war. Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “Drone footage from above documents the massive and extensive destruction over Tel Aviv.”

Reverse-searching keyframes of the video led us to the same footage shared by a YouTube channel on July 26, 2023. The channel stated that this was drone footage of the destruction of Ukraine’s Bakhmut city.

We also found the video shared by Ukrainian journalist Illia Ponomarenko on July 24, 2023. He too said that the video showed the city of Bakhmut, destroyed by Russia’s attack.

OLD FOOTAGE

A nighttime video of a car parked on a road, with fire all around, and firefighters trying to extinguish it, is also viral on social media. An X user captioned the video: “This is not Gaza, this is Tel Aviv. Iran is delivering eviction notices daily.”

Reverse-searching the keyframes from the video led us to the same clip published by Israeli news outlet Arutz Sheva on its YouTube channel on November 2, 2023. According to the channel, the video showed visuals from Kiryat Shmona, a city located in the northern part of Israel near the Lebanese border.

We also found the screenshots from the video in a report published by The Times of Israel on November 2, 2023. According to the report, Hamas claimed responsibility for the attack from Lebanon — it fired 12 rockets — at the northern city of Kiryat Shmona.

The report also mentioned that at least one landed in a shopping area, heavily damaging cars and a store.

Hence, we concluded that neither video shows destruction in Tel Aviv amid the ongoing war.
