RAC Arena is the first venue in WA to be certified as a “Green Venue”, recognised for making positive sustainability changes such as introducing reusable stack cups at bar outlets.
Since 2026 began, new data shows RAC Arena is diverting more than 98 per cent of waste from landfill (in volume), going above and beyond a 70 per cent goal.
This has been achieved by enforcing compostable packaging, installing green bins for organic waste and in 2019, implementing stack cups at bars — reusable cups which stack for easier handling.
RAC Arena’s sustainability approach has also seen the introduction of Containers for Change in 2021, which has so far donated more than $100,000 to the arena’s charity partners, including Salvation Army WA.
The entertainment hotspot received a score of four stars under Green Music Australia’s Green Venue Certification program, which is equal to the current top-ranking venue, ICC Sydney.
The program, which launched in 2025, celebrates venues undertaking beneficial changes for the planet.
Participating venues are measured against a range of key selection criteria, including energy, waste, water, food and drinks and procurement.
Once assessed, venues are provided with a star rating based on their performance.
RAC Arena general manager Michael Scott said his team was proud to be recognised as a certified “Green Venue”.
“Part of our mission is to make a positive difference in the community we operate in, and this acknowledgement demonstrates we’re taking the right steps to reduce your venue’s environmental footprint,” he said.
“This achievement highlights the arena’s exceptional environmental strategies and initiatives, and our ambitious plan to set the new standard for sustainability excellence in the live entertainment industry in Perth and beyond.”
Green Music Australia national programs manager Emma Bosworth said it was encouraging to see a venue with a diverse range of waste streams, “a powerful step towards reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill”.
“The reusable stack cups are a great visible reminder of the venue’s commitment to sustainability,” she said.
“Congratulations to the RAC Arena team on achieving four stars.”
