Golden from KPop Demon Hunters made history as the first K-Pop song to win an Oscar on Sunday (15.03.26).

The catchy track won the Best Song accolade ahead of Dear Me from Diane Warren: Relentless, I Lied to You from Sinners, Sweet Dreams of Joy from Viva Verdi, and the title song from Train Dreams, and writer and performer EJAE was overwhelmed with emotion when she stepped onto the stage with her writing partners to accept the prize.

Speaking on stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, she tearfully said: “Thank you, Oh my god. Thank you so much to the Academy. Growing up, people made fun of me for liking Kpop but now everyone is singing our song, with it’s Korean lyrics, I’m so proud.

“I realise that this award is not about success, it’s about resilience.

“I want to thank my mom, my dad, my brother, my fiancé, my manager.”

She then passed the microphone to Mark Sonnenblick, but he was played off before giving his speech.

Golden was one of the favourites to win the award, and earlier in the evening, EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami – who performed the singing voices of Rumi, Mira and Zoey respectively in the film – had treated the audience to a performance of the track.

The Best Song prize was KPop Demon Hunters’ second win of the evening, following a victory in the Best Animated Film Category.

Co-writer and co-director Maggie Kang gave an emotional speech as she accepted the honour.

She said: “Thank you to the Academy and to all fans who got us here, and for those of you who look like me.

“For those of you who look like me, I’m so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this, but it is here. That means the next generations don’t have to go longing. This is for Korea and Koreans everywhere.”
