A teenager has been charged over a fatal car crash which killed a 15-year-old and injured several others in Melbourne’s southwest.

The 17-year-old boy was arrested in the Wyndham area by Victoria Police on Saturday, with detectives charging the boy with culpable driving causing death alongside other driving offences.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Victorian Police described the “shocking” incident as an attempted carjacking and high-speed pursuit.

An allegedly stolen Skoda sedan pursued a Toyota while speeding on suburban Derrimut Rd, colliding with the Toyota’s rear and then losing control and crashing with a Ford sedan and Ford Ranger.

Inside the Skoda was seven teenagers, with the crashed vehicle allegedly stolen days earlier from Yellow Box St in Maidstone.

The allegedly stolen Skoda rolled several times before finally coming to a stop in the front yard of a nearby residence. One passenger, a 15-year old boy, died on the scene after he was thrown out of the vehicle.

Four of the Skoda passengers are believed to have fled after the crash, with investigations ongoing into their identities, police said.

A quantity of alcohol was found in the vehicle and an edged weapon, believed to have been a sword, was seized at the scene of the crash.

Injured in the crash was a 16-year-old girl who remains in hospital under police guard. Arrests were carried out on another 16-year-old girl at the scene and later a 14-year-old boy, who was arrested after he arrived with his family at a nearby hospital.

Both teenagers were interviewed by Victoria Police investigators and released pending further investigations.

Major Collision Investigation Unit Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy said: “This is a shocking circumstance that could have resulted in multiple fatalities.

“This is not a PlayStation game where you can hit reset and start again. This is real lives, real situations that cannot be undone.

“We could have had multiple youths, kids killed, including members of the public who are going about their everyday lives and have now been significantly impacted by trauma.”

Victoria Police are investigating the circumstances leading up the fatal crash.
