This is getting ridiculous. The Dogs piled on another four goals to start the final term, racing the prospect of a 100-point win. In contrast, GWS have just 6.9 for the match. Aaron Naughton has raced up to six majors in an excellent start to the season.

In Hawthorn’s dismantling of Essendon by 10 goals on Friday night, Brad Scott said the Bombers were beaten by what they know.

Club great and former captain Matthew Lloyd called the loss “damning” on 3AW and questioned if the players cared after their defensive fadeout, but new skipper Andy McGrath said he was inspired by the performance of his old captain Zach Merrett, given the circumstances.

Merrett was one of Essendon’s few standouts as Hawthorn’s system and pressure overwhelmed the Bombers following an even opening.

Essendon stayed with the Hawks for much of the first half, before a six-goal blitz blew the game open before half-time.

And there’s the siren for the final break. It was another powerful term for the Dogs who powered home five goals to two, putting an exclamation mark on the state of play.

Western Bulldogs 16.6 (102) lead GWS Giants 6.8 (44)

Toby Greene snagged a goal at the 11-minute mark but even that early in the quarter it was too little too late from the orange outfit. The Dogs built up a lead of about 10 goals and it looks like an insurmountable target to reel in for GWS.

Sam Darcy gets up three goals, as the club’s key names have a day out. Barely six minutes into the third quarter and the Doggies already having another four goals.

Five minutes into the third quarter and the Dogs won’t relent. Goals to Liberatore and two to Naughton (for four for the game) spark the prospect of a thrashing. The Giants, largely, haven’t turned up and, in contrast, the big Dogs are up and going. This could get very ugly for GWS.

Here’s a simple half-time tip for Giants coach Adam Kingsley: Man up Marcus Bontemeplli for goodness sake. The Bont has been allowed to roam unchecked in the first half at Marvel Stadium and hasn’t he loved the freedom. The Bulldogs skipper has had 18 disposals and kicked three goals. He is clearly the best player on the ground. Fox Footy commentator Nick Dal Santo is equally perplexed by the Giants’ lack of accountability. “Maybe someone needs to pay more respect to the Bont,” he said.
“Team defence can be the only justification, but someone has to pay him more respect.”

That was a huge quarter by the Bulldogs. Marcus Bontempelli was brilliant. It’s easy to forget the Dogs were without his services at the start of last year.

Western Bulldogs 11.1 (67) lead GWS Giants 4.5 (29)

Finn Callaghan boots a beauty for the Giants. With half-time just around the corner, the Bulldogs hold a commanding lead, however.
