Rosamund Pike has reflected on the end of her relationship with film director Joe Wright.

In rare comments about the break up, the actress, 47, describing the breakdown of her engagement with the filmmaker, 53, as a deeply painful experience that unfolded after the pair met while working together on the 2005 film Pride and Prejudice.

She told the How to Fail with Elizabeth Day podcast they “had a huge love affair”.

Rosamund added: “We were very, very in love, we had masses of adventures, we were very wild, and then it all fell apart.

“When it falls apart, everybody thinks, ‘Oh my God, what is it? Must be an affair, polygamy, drug scandal.’ I don’t even know what people think, but people definitely think the worst.

“And so they look at you, you get the benevolent pity again, from all angles.

“It is devastating. It’s utterly devastating, but it’s not devastating in any of the ways that people imagine.”

Rosamund also addressed speculation that circulated at the time about the reasons behind the split, saying the circumstances were less dramatic than rumours suggested.

She added the reasons were “far less spectacular” than what had been reported publicly.

Rosamund described the period following the separation as extremely difficult, particularly during the first holiday season after the breakup.

The actress said returning to her parents’ home after the end of the engagement felt emotionally challenging.

Rosamund added: “Even to retreat back to your parents feels like a bit of a failure because you should be embarking on your own life and having them ‘round to your place.

“So going back with your tail between your legs, it sort of feels a bit, well, it feels like a failure, a big adult failure.

“And also, you really love someone and they don’t love you anymore. That’s also not great.”

During the interview, Rosamund was asked about reports that the breakup occurred after wedding invitations had already been sent to guests.

She said the claim was inaccurate.

Rosamund added: “That’s a story that’s, again, speculation by the press, I’m afraid.

“That’s not true. We’d asked people to save the date. We hadn’t had invitations sent out, and we’d had a lovely plan of a wedding in Italy.”

Rosamund and Joe began dating after meeting during the production of the 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, which Joe directed and in which Rosamund starred.

The couple later became engaged before separating in 2008.

Rosamund later said the end of the engagement ultimately led her to reconsider traditional expectations about relationships and marriage.

She has since been in a long-term relationship with businessman Robie Uniacke since 2009.

The couple have two sons together – Solo, 13, and Atom, 11.
