The Kapoor family has taken a legal step to safeguard the legacy of late actor Rishi Kapoor, securing rights over the use of his name to prevent any unauthorised or commercial misuse.

According to a source, the family recently obtained permission to copyright the actor’s name, ensuring that any individual or entity seeking to use “Rishi Kapoor” in a professional, commercial, or public capacity would require prior permission from the family.

A reliable source said, “As per the copyright, anyone wanting to use the name Rishi Kapoor or mention it in any capacity would need prior permission from the family.” The move, the source added, was primarily undertaken to ensure that the late actor’s name and legacy are not misused after his death.

Rishi Kapoor, one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable stars, died on April 30, 2020, at the age of 67 after a prolonged battle with leukemia. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he appeared in more than 150 films and remained one of the industry’s most enduring leading men, from romantic classics like Bobby to later character-driven roles in films such as Agneepath, Kapoor & Sons and Mulk.

In recent years, prominent celebrities and pubic figures have increasingly taken legal measures to protect names, likenesses, and intellectual property linked to their legacy. Such steps are often intended to prevent unauthorised commercial use, including merchandising, brand associations, or projects that may attempt to capitalise on a public figure’s identity without consent.

Sources indicate that the Kapoor family’s decision is aligned with similar practices globally, where families or estates maintain control over how a late artist’s name and legacy are represented in public and commercial spaces.

India Today reached out to Ranbir Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor for comments and their responses are still awaited.
