Two people who were pulled unresponsive have died at an unpatrolled beach south of Sydney.

Members of the public pulled a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman from the water at Shellharbour Beach in the Illawarra, then started CPR.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and continued the resuscitation efforts.

However, the man and woman couldn’t be revived and died at the scene.

Emergency services were called to Shellharbour Beach at 11.10am on Wednesday, following reports two people were struggling in the water.

NSW Police will provide an update later on Wednesday.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

It’s the latest drowning tragedy this summer, with at 81 deaths reported across the country since December 1.

“This represents one person drowning almost every day over summer,” Royal Life Saving Australia said on its website.

Three other people drowned in NSW since the weekend.

On Sunday, the bodies of two rock fisherman were pulled from the water off the Central Coast after they were washed off rocks.

Neither man – both from the Sydney suburb of Beecroft – was wearing a life jacket when their bodies were found off Little Beach, Bouddi National Park late on Saturday.

And a 76-year-old man died in Lismore Base Hospital on Sunday, after he was pulled from the surf at Lighthouse Beach at East Ballina last Friday.
