India will have their blueprint for the ODI World Cup 2027 ready by the end of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, said coach Gautam Gambhir. Speaking after India’s T20 World Cup defence on Sunday, March 8, Gambhir said that the management will take a well-deserved rest and then start working on their plan for the next big ICC tournament.
The ODI World Cup 2027 is set to be held in the fast and bouncy conditions of South Africa. The tournament will be co-hosted by Namibia and Zimbabwe as well. Speaking about the event, Gambhir said that his team will work on identifying individuals for the tournament and finalise the plan by the end of May. India will play 25 to 30 ODIs in the build-up to the marquee ICC event.

“The planning for the 2027 World Cup will start after the IPL. There are 25 to 30 ODIs between IPL 2026 and the World Cup. This format is not played a lot these days. The earlier we start planning, the better it will be for us,” Gautam Gambhir said in the interview.
“South Africa is not an easy place to play cricket. We have to figure out combinations and identify the players who are suited to the conditions. The selectors and the coaches will do that. By the time IPL 2026 ends, India will have a blueprint for the ODI World Cup 2027,” Gambhir added.
Former India captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be in focus when India play their next ODI match. The team will return to action on June 14 in their three match ODI series against Afghanistan. The Afghan side were impressive in the previous edition of the World Cup, hosted in India, where they narrowly missed out on a semi-final spot due to Glenn Maxwell’s record-shattering double hundred.
After Afghanistan, India will travel to England to play a three-match ODI series.
The fates of the two senior players will depend on their performances in the said matches. Virat Kohli has been in sensational form in ODIs of late, scoring a truckload of runs against South Africa and New Zealand. In sharp contrast to Virat, Rohit’s runs dried up in the New Zealand series, but he looks hell-bent on making a strong comeback.
Rohit has lost a lot of weight and has been training in Mumbai alongside the likes of Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Before the ODI matches, the duo will be seen playing for their respective franchises in the Indian Premier League 2026 season.
