Rockingham-Mandurah slumped to the bottom of the ladder at the conclusion of the Premier Cricket season after the previously last-placed Scarborough pulled off a remarkable victory over a Willetton side battling for second ahead of finals.

The Mariners were always up against it after Bayswater-Morley won the toss and elected to bat on day one, hitting an imposing 9-293, with captain Lane Berry scoring 92 and Jake Collingwood 65.

Jake Pattison was the pick of the bowlers with 5-79.

In reply, Rockingham-Mandurah were in all sorts of trouble early following a Jonty Wilde blitz, who snared the wickets of openers Mitch Oliver and Sumit Yadav for one and three respectively, as well as Amin Mehraj Rhid for a duck.

The Mariners’ hopes rested with State-contracted player Teague Wyllie but when he was caught off the bowling of Callum Wiggers for just one, the game was all but over at 4-9

Things managed to get worse, with the consecutive wickets of Shahroz Khan for five, captain Damien Burrage for a duck and Archie Sutton also for a duck, leaving the Mariners teetering at 7-21 and at the risk of complete humiliation.

A 60-run partnership between Aaron Burrage and Bryce Becker added some respectability to the scoreboard.

Becker eventually went for 17 and Pattison for one as Aaron Burrage sought to retain the strike, but he was the last wicket to fall for 71, the Mariners all out for 112.

Rockingham-Mandurah had entered the round ahead of Scarborough, who had posted a competitive score of 9-254 against Willetton.

But the star-studded Dragons — whose line-up included WA players Cameron Bancroft and Aaron Hardie, and former white ball international D’Arcy Short — would have been confident of a win resuming at 0-8 with a chance to finish second on the ladder.

But with Bancroft on State duties and not batting on day two, Scarborough set about causing a boilover.

Lachlan Tyler snared opener Kyle Smith as well as the key wicket of Hardie for one, while George Pullinger got Short for just seven.

Willetton slumped to 6-64, but with opener Ethan Smith (111) playing an anchor innings, they fought back, a partnership with Alex Hepburn (42) adding 100.

Smith went with the score on 200, but Stewart Hepburn and Matt Hann took it to 240, just 15 runs short of victory, before Samuel Timmins snared Hepburn and then Zach Ferris in consecutive balls to claim a sensational victory and cue celebrations.

Scarborough leapfrogged Rockingham-Mandurah, consigning the Mariners to last and the wooden spoon.
