According to South Africa Rugby’s chief executive officer Rian Oberholzer, the two most prosperous nations have much chance of hosting a World Cup in the near future.

Since the first World Cup in 1987, South Africa has won four and New Zealand has three, but neither nation is in range to host a potential competition with the next playoffs set for Australia in 2031 and the United States in 2031.

The two union giants were left out of the buying process for the 2035 Rugby World Cup due to early interest.

Oberholzer said at a SA Rugby press conference on Monday that” I think we have moved away from the idea that everyone has a fair chance to host a World Cup.”

” World Rugby needs a World Cup that New Zealand and South Africa won’t generate the revenue.” I don’t believe it has any bearing on us. What matters more to the best attention of rugby is more.

Both nations have sluggish economic growth and little taste for federal funding for sporting event spectacles.

While South Africa staged the 1995 game but has since lost some requests, New Zealand co-hosted with Australia in 1987 and on their own in 2011.

” All members of the Rugby World Cup receive some funding from a Rugby World Cup,” Oberholzer said, adding that the only revenue stream for ( governing body ) World Rugby must provide for the entire ecosystem.

” Western sport may win the World Cup where the most money is made, and where local and national governments will support them.”
