Katherine Hartley Short, the eldest daughter of actor and comedian Martin Short, has died aged 42.
US outlet TMZ reported that her death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Los Angeles Police Department found Katherine at her Hollywood Hills home on Monday, about 6pm.
A spokesperson for the Short family confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time.”
“Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world.”
Katherine graduated from New York University in 2006 before establishing herself professionally as a licensed clinical social worker in Los Angeles.
She specialised in mental health and advocacy.
Martin and his late wife of 30 years, actress Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 following a battle with ovarian cancer adopted Katherine and her younger brothers Oliver, 39, and Henry, 36.
In 2024, Martin reflected on his wife’s passing in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter saying her death was “absolutely horrible, obviously, and as sad as anything”.
“I will tell you what I said to my kids at the time: ‘I believe Mum has zoomed into our souls.’”
The tragedy comes during an already difficult period for Short, who is continuing to grieve the loss of his close friend and longtime collaborator, Katherine O’Hara.
It also comes just one day after beloved Disney actor Robert Carradine died by suicide at the age of 71 after reportedly living with bipolar disorder for two decades.
He was most known for starring alongside Hilary Duff in Lizzie McGuire and cult classic Revenge of The Nerds.
His family and the cast of Lizzie McGuire took to social media with heartbreaking tributes for the entertainer.
