East Fremantle Football Club is waiting on a decision that could affect the start of its 2026 pre-season due to a stoush over a fence.
The Sharks are based at the recently revamped East Fremantle Community Park, which does not have a fence.
It’s the only WAFL facility without a fence, enabling spectators to watch top level WA football free.
The Sharks were allowed to play without a fence in 2024 and 2025 but WA Football is now saying one may be needed.
Representatives from the East Fremantle Football Club, Town of East Fremantle, WA Football and the State Government met this week to try resolve the impasse, ahead of club’s first pre-season games at the oval on February 28.
It is understood the Sharks are seeking a permanent exemption.
“The club has clearly outlined its preferred position, reflecting the unique design and community-focused nature of our home venue,” the EFFC said on social media.
“No final decision has been made. We will continue to engage constructively and provide an update once a determination is confirmed.
“We’re looking forward to the season ahead and can’t wait to play footy at Good Grocer Park.”
The town said in a statement it was surprised to hear a fence may be needed.
“While the project was being developed, the requirement for no fence was known by all stakeholders,” it said.
“WAF was consulted in the development of the business plan and was open to the concept of no fence, with the exception of finals.
“The town’s position on no fence at the park is consistent with extensive community consultation involving key stakeholders, and backed by a comprehensive business plan, the State Government’s position and the funding agreement.”
The town said spectator numbers at WAFL games had increased under the open access arrangement.
“Commercial agreements signed during the park’s development — with the support of the State Government — have ensured that the oval is accessible to the public at all times, which enables fans and community-members to watch local WAFL games,” its statement said.
WA Football is expected to make a decision next week.
In addition to being home to the EFFC, the park precinct accommodates the East Fremantle Bowls Club, the East Fremantle Croquet Club, youth facilities, a health and fitness club, a cafe and restaurant, nature playground, the East Freo Playgroup and a child health clinic.
