Bad Bunny paid tribute to his late uncle during his Super Bowl half time show.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican singer headlined the special concert during Sunday’s (08.02.26) NFL showpiece game wearing a cream Zara set featuring wide-legged trousers and a shoulder-padded football top with his surname, Ocasio, and the number 64 on the back, and he’s explained the meaning behind the digit.

The Monaco hitmaker paid homage to his uncle Cutito, who was born in 1964 and left Puerto Rico to work in the US mainland when he was 17 years old. Cuitito taught Bad Bunny “much of what he knows about the NFL” and it was his influence that led to the performer supporting the San Francisco 49ers.

He added to The Cut: “I always dreamed of taking my uncle to a Super Bowl, and I couldn’t. He left unexpectedly, without warning.

“So during my Super Bowl halftime show, I decided to have him on my shirt.

“I dedicated my performance to him before it began. I’m sure he saw it, he was present, and he felt proud of his nephew.”

During the show, Bad Bunny showcased his daring acrobatics and producers have told how he “refused to wear a harness” for stunts including climbing a utility pole without guardrails.

The show’s director, Hamish Hamilton, told Variety: “He refused to wear a harness.

“He was like, ‘I don’t need it.’ There are all kinds of legal ramifications to that, which is not really my thing, but interestingly enough, when he decided he wasn’t going to wear a harness, we were able to then put a camera on the pole to look down at him climbing up!”

Creative director Harriet Cuddeford added: “He does his own stunts, that guy, and he learned it in about three minutes.

“Straight up that pole. At rehearsal, we were all like, ‘Is he gonna be OK?’ But he just went straight up there, and managed his vocals. Very agile. He could just, like, handle anything.”

Bad Bunny took to the stage at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California halfway through the Seattle Seahawks’ game with the New England Patriots and performed some of his biggest hits, including Tití Me Preguntó, MONACO and BAILE INoLVIDABLE.

The artist – whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – also welcomed guest performers such as Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin onto the stage during his set, which also featured cameos from the likes of Pedro Pascal, Cardi B, Karol G and Jessica Alba.

After the event, Gaga wrote on Instagram: “It was my absolute honor to be a part of Benito’s halftime show.

“Thank you Benito for inviting me and thank you to the entire cast for welcoming me onto your stage. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
