At least 14 people have been killed as a major fire broke out at a hotel in central Kolkata’s Mechuapatti area on Tuesday night. The incident occurred at around 8:15 pm causing panic in the area.
Soon after the blaze was reported, fire tenders reached the spot. Several people were seen trying to escape through the windows and narrow ledges of the building. Two people sustained injuries while trying to jump from the fourth floor.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, said, “The teams have recovered 14 bodies, and several people have been rescued. Further investigation is underway.”

The police have launched a further investigation into the matter. A special team has also been formed for the investigation. Forensic team will visit the place soon.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but an electrical short circuit is suspected to have triggered it. An eyewitness said that the fire started from the kitchen. But the forensic team will confirm the exact cause.

BJP Calls For ‘Stricter Monitoring’ Of Fire Safety
In a post on X, state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar condoled the death and urged the state administration to rescue the affected immediately. He also called for “stricter monitoring” of fire safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
“I urge the state administration to immediately rescue those affected, ensure their safety, and provide them with necessary medical and humanitarian assistance. Additionally, I appeal for a thorough review and stricter monitoring of fire safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future,” he said in a post on X.
