Maintaining heart health is crucial not only for longevity but also for overall well-being, as the heart plays a vital role in supplying oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. Heart disease in India has now become a serious concern, not only for the elderly but also for the youth.

According to Dr Mukul Bhatnagar, Head of the Cardiology Department at Tanda Medical College Hospital, young individuals between 20 and 30 years of age are also experiencing heart attacks. This trend is alarming, and the underlying causes are even more concerning.

Dr Bhatnagar states that heart disease tends to appear around 10 years earlier in India compared to other countries. While individuals in the West typically experience heart-related issues between the ages of 50 and 60, in India, the risk often emerges before the age of 40.

The situation has worsened post-Covid, with a noticeable rise in heart disease and heart attack cases among people as young as 20 to 30 years old. On average, 8 to 10 heart attack cases are reported daily at Tanda Medical College, and over 2,500 heart patients are treated monthly in its OPD.

Most of these cases involve men who smoke, while in women, the risk increases after menopause. Experts believe that heart disease is not merely a physical ailment but also a reflection of an unhealthy lifestyle. An irregular routine, excessive consumption of junk food, lack of physical activity, and high stress levels all contribute to the growing burden on the heart.

How To Take Care Of Your Heart?

Dr Bhatnagar recommends the following:

  • Quit smoking completely.
  • Avoid fried and oily foods.
  • Exercise or go for a walk for at least 30 minutes daily.
  • Get regular health check-ups.
  • Reduce stress and ensure adequate sleep.
