Rohit Sharma produced some magic with an unbeaten 76 and Suryakumar Yadav’s aggressive 68 helped MI secure revenge against CSK and defeat them in the second IPL El Clasico of the season by 9 wickets. CSK posted 176 runs on the board thanks to fifties from Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja and an entertaining cameo from Ayush Mhatre but the onslaught from Rohit and Suryakumar blew them away at the Wankhede stadium.

The loss meant that Chennai remain rooted at the bottom of the table as MI went to 6th on the points table and boosted their net run-rate. The game was always hinging on the toss at the Wankhede and it fell in favour of Hardik Pandya, who quickly decided they would bowl first.

Chennai Super Kings made a bold call for the game as they handed 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre his IPL debut in front of his home crowd. The opening pair of Shaik Rasheed and Rachin Ravindra struggled initially as the MI bowlers were on the money and the fielders backed up well.

Ashwani Kumar provided the first breakthrough as he dismissed Rachin with the score at 16 in 3.1 overs. This brought the young Mhatre to the crease, and he announced himself on the big stage with some effort. The Mumbai batter took to the IPL stage like duck to water and got a boundary and two sixes off Ashwani in the same over. For someone who idolises Rohit, there was certainly a touch of the India captain in some of the shots.

Mhatre continued the onslaught with a few boundaries off Deepak Chahar and raced to 32 off just 15 balls before Chahar got his revenge. However, this is when the CSK car became one that lost its clutch as they got stuck in first gear.

Rasheed also fell soon after as Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube were put under pressure as CSK went from 48 for 1 in 6 overs to 70 for 3 in 10. Dube was the first to break the shackles as he took on Hardik first for a six and followed it up with a maximum and boundary off in the 15th over.

By then CSK got a move on as Dube and Jadeja got 24 runs off Ashwani’s 16th over. Dube was finally dismissed by Bumrah for 50 as Dhoni made his way to the field. However, Bumrah ensured Dhoni’s stay was a short one as MI clawed their way back into the contest.

Jadeja hit a boundary and six off Boult in the final over as CSK reached 176 for 5 in their 20 overs as the all-rounder got to his fifty as well. The Mumbai innings began exactly opposite to that of the Chennai one as Ryan Rickleton set the pace with two boundaries in the first over.

Rohit started going with a six off Jamie Overton and the next one was his big test against Khaleel Ahmed. In 7 innings, Rohit was dismissed three times by the left-arm pacer, with one of them being in MI’s first game of the season.

But Rohit showed no worries and hit a six and two boundaries off Khaleel to continue his good nick with the bat, despite the low scores. But Sunday seemed like the day the Mumbai legend finally found his groove as another six came off Overton. Ashwin and Jadeja were able to slow things up a bit as the latter got the wicket of Rickleton.

Suryakumar was sent in to nullify the spin threat and he did exactly that with a six and boundary off Jadeja and did the same in the next over as well from the CSK all-rounder. Rohit, on the other hand, slowly moved along well and got his first fifty off the season off 33 balls.

Noor Ahmed was taken apart by Suryakumar as he hit him for three boundaries in his second over as MI were cruising to the win. The tactic to bring Matheesha Pathirana also failed as his first over went for 14 runs, with Rohit getting a lucky six off the final ball.

Suryakumar got to his fifty in 26 balls and Rohit also decided to take the attack to Noor with a boundary. Suryakumar hit a six as the equation was just 20 off 30 balls. Two sixes, one each for Rohit and Suryakumar ensured MI reduced the deficit to just 6. He then finished things off with another maximum as their partnership remained unbeaten on 114 and Mumbai secured their fourth win of the campaign and moved to sixth in the points table.
