‘Let’s Keep The World Healthy’: Apollo Hospitals’ Dr Sangita Reddy Is CNN-News18’s Businessperson Of The Year 2024

Dr Sangita Reddy is the Joint Managing Director (JMD) of Apollo Hospitals.

Dr Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director (JMD) of Apollo Hospitals, was declared the CNN-News18 Indian of the Year 2024 in the business category in the 14th edition of the awards held on Friday.

“This award is an acknowledgement of the healthcare in India. My father, Dr Reddy, who had returned from the US in 1980, lost a young patient. He had then asked, “Why can’t we give this standard of healthcare in India?”. He raised capital…Those were venture capitalists in those years. From that time when he dreamt of giving world-class facilities, to this is testament to the fact that dreams come true if you think of giving back to society,” said Reddy.

Let’s keep the world healthy,” she said, adding, “When everyone pays a little, it goes to those who need it…Ayushman Bharat is one big step. The second step is the world is looking at non-communicable diseases, which are mainly lifestyle diseases.”

Asked about the 90-hour work hours debate, she said, “I work for 90 hours…But it is key to find your balance.”

On a lighter note, her husband and politician KV Reddy asked when she would keep her phone on silent, she replied, “Today it is on call forward…I don’t want anyone needing healthcare to not get it…But we will use technology…I promise to put my phone on silent.”

Reddy thanked her parents, sisters, husband, children and the team for her success. “I want to dedicate it to the unsung heroes such as nurses, ayahs, caregivers at home, and anybody who is committed to giving care,” she said.

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal, Bajaj Auto MD Rajiv Bajaj, Team HAL were the others nominated in the category.

Regarded as India’s biggest and most credible news television awards, IOTY celebrates exceptional achievements of Indians who are inspiring the world through their triumphs.

The jury for this edition was environmental activist Afroze Shah, former Solicitor General of India Harish Salve and former Supreme Court judge Indu Malhotra.

The selection process was a mix of both jury and public voting; with 50% of the decision-making power given to the audience, and the remaining 50% is entrusted to the jury, striking a balance between collective choice of the masses and the discerning eye of experts.

RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group is the Presenting Partner and Reliance Industries is the Associate Partner for this edition of CNN-News18 Indian of the Year.
