High cholesterol often goes undetected without a blood test, but in some cases, the body and face may show subtle signs.

Yellow patches around eyelids may indicate high cholesterol.

High cholesterol often goes unnoticed because it usually doesn’t show clear symptoms. Unlike other health issues, it may not cause tiredness, weakness, or visible signs. However, it is closely linked to heart problems. Over time, cholesterol can build up in the arteries, leading to blockages. This can result in a heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction. Cholesterol levels of 200 mg/dL or higher are usually considered high. A reading between 200–239 mg/dL is seen as borderline high, though this may vary depending on health guidelines.

The most accurate way to know your cholesterol level is through a blood test. However, some signs may appear on the face or body. Here are some possible symptoms of high cholesterol you should watch for.

Xanthelasma, or yellow patches surrounding the eyelids

Yellow patches or small bumps around the eyelids can be a clear sign of high cholesterol. These soft, painless spots are known as xanthelasma. They are fatty deposits that form under the skin and usually appear near the corners of the eyes. While they don’t cause pain and are generally harmless, they often signal high cholesterol levels in the body. If you notice such yellowish patches around your eyes, it’s wise to consult a doctor and get your cholesterol levels tested.

Small bumps or rash-like lumps that appear suddenly (eruptive xanthomas)

Eruptive xanthomas are small red or yellow bumps that show up suddenly in groups and can resemble a rash or tiny warts. They occur when triglyceride levels in the blood become extremely high, leading to fat building up in the skin. These bumps usually form on the face, arms, or buttocks. Their sudden appearance is a warning sign and should be taken seriously, as they indicate dangerously high cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Immediate medical attention is needed to properly manage and treat the condition.

Arcus Senilis or Corneal Arcus: A grey or white ring encircling the cornea

A grey or white ring around the outer edge of the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) is called corneal arcus or arcus senilis. While it’s often seen in older adults and usually harmless at that age, its appearance in people under 45 can be a sign of high cholesterol. This ring forms when cholesterol builds up in the cornea. If you spot this ring in your eyes at a younger age, it’s a good idea to see a doctor and get your cholesterol levels checked.

Net-Like Patterns on the Skin in Blue or Purple

In some cases, high cholesterol can cause a condition known as cholesterol embolisation syndrome. This happens when small blood vessels become blocked by bits of cholesterol plaque. One visible sign of this is a bluish or purplish, net-like pattern that appears on the skin. This is a serious symptom and suggests poor blood circulation. If it’s not treated quickly, it can lead to damage in the affected tissue, so immediate medical care is important.

Yellowish pigmentation or discolouration of the skin (Xanthoderma)

A yellow tint or discolouration on the skin, especially around the eyes and face, can be linked to high cholesterol. This condition, known as xanthoderma, occurs when cholesterol-filled deposits collect within the layers of the skin. While it doesn’t appear in everyone with high cholesterol, its presence may be a sign of hyperlipidemia, which means elevated fat levels in the blood. If you notice this kind of skin change, it’s a good idea to get your cholesterol levels tested.
