Nearly 32 years after she went missing, a 13-year-old girl in the United States has been found alive and safe in 2026.

Christina Maria Plante from Star Valley in Arizona was last seen on May 15, 1994, when she left her home to walk to a nearby stable. According to the Gila County Sheriff’s office, Plante was reported missing after she “vanished without a trace.”

Plante, now aged 45, has been located and identified, said the sheriff’s office. Additional details about her have not been released, with local officials citing the need to protect her privacy and well-being.

“Utilising advances in technology, modern investigative techniques and detailed case review, detectives developed new leads that ultimately led to a breakthrough,” the county office said in a statement on April 1.

Her disappearance remained a mystery for law enforcement agencies for many years, despite extensive search efforts and follow-ups by sleuths. Plante also entered the US missing children database, leading to her posters being distributed across the country. Over the years, her disappearance turned into a “cold case”.

In legal and law enforcement parlance, a “cold case” refers to an unsolved criminal investigation that remains open pending new evidence.

Plante’s case came under the spotlight after the sheriff’s office formed a Cold Case Unit to resolve unsolved incidents in the county.

“The case underscores the importance of cold case review initiatives and the impact of evolving technologies in bringing long-awaited answers to families and communities,” the statement read.

While reiterating its commitment to resolving other “cold cases”, the sheriff’s office thanked investigators, analysts and community members for keeping the case alive for three decades.
