A hot Mitch Duke during the World Cup? Mile Sterjovski, a former Socceroos midfielder, should be happy about it.
In Macarthur FC’s 3-2 win over A-League Men officials Newcastle on Thursday, Duke stole the present at Campbelltown Stadium, scoring the opening goal, adding an aid, and therefore unleashing the match-winner.
The 50-cap Socceroo was unquestionably the most dangerous player on the field as he carved through Mark Milligan’s fresh Jet dress and proved unstoppable in the air.
After returning to the regional league in January, Duke, 35, hasn’t kept his desire to play in a second World Cup solution.
While Duke was unable to make a spot in national team boss Tony Popovic’s 26-man squad for friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao last month, injuries to young players NicholasD’Agostino and Mohamed Toure ( groin ) have kept the door wide open for a potential recall.
In the final glass, Popovic called up untested group Lucas Herrington, Deni Juric, and Ante Suto while throwing a crutch to Awer Mabil. In addition, Popovic has shown he is willing to experiment.
Before the World Cup, Australia will face Mexico in Los Angeles on May 30 for one more chance to make the Socceroos ‘ roster.
It would be foolish to completely rule out Duke, according to Bulls manager Sterjovski, a 43-cap Socceroo who played for Australia during the ancient World Cup of 2006.
Since he’s joined us,” He’s put in some excellent achievements,” Sterjovski said.
” I feel like he wins a lot of headers and url in the field because of the power that he’s playing at, the anger, the manner he closes over.”
If he wraps up the season this manner, if I were a Socceroos manager, I would pick him, he said.
Harry Sawyer struck his quadriceps and was taken off in the 74th second, but Sterjovski claimed the 35-year-old had just given his all.
His adductor doesn’t cause any problems. He ultimately “was simply fatigued,” said Terjovski.
He reached the point where he raised his hand and said,” I’m almost done.”
Milligan, a mentor for Newcastle who has played for Australia on 80 occasions, even had high hopes for the former striker.
Mitchell Duke has a wonderful attitude, Milligan said, and you can tell how hard he works.
If Dukey and other people in the A-League can put their best foot forwards over the course of these six, seven months, then a great reward will be awarded, not just for Dukey.
With back-to-back victories coming before going winless in their previous six games, sixth-placed Macarthur kept their playoffs hopes alive with a staring performance from Duke.
